My story
Khadija K. Swims, Esq. is the owner and sole proprietor of The Law Offices of Khadija K. Swims, based in Saginaw, Michigan and offering legal services statewide. With a background as an Assistant Public Defender, Attorney Swims has spent her career advocating for underrepresented and marginalized communities. She has served in the Saginaw Defenders Office, the Washtenaw Public Defenders Office, and the Kent County Office of the Defender.
At the Saginaw Defenders Office, Attorney Swims specialized in Domestic Violence cases, focusing on instances where women—often the true victims—were wrongfully charged as defendants. Due to her skilled representation, every case she litigated, where the client had been wrongly accused, resulted in an acquittal.
Attorney Swims also served as a Judicial Law Clerk for the Honorable Janelle A. Lawless at the Ingham County 30th Judicial Circuit Court and worked as a law clerk at The Law Offices of Teresa A. Bingman, where she contributed to the Flint Water Crisis case.
With expertise spanning criminal, family, and child welfare law, as well as social work, public health, and nonprofit operations, Attorney Swims brings a unique blend of skills to her practice.
Before becoming a licensed attorney, she worked as the Senior Community Health Consultant for the Michigan Child Death Review Program at the Michigan Public Health Institute. In that role, she advocated for public policy changes at the local, state, and federal levels related to child safety, health, education, and welfare. She also provided training and technical assistance to more than 28 counties across Michigan on data collection and program evaluation.
Attorney Swims also worked as a Foster Care Case Manager for a private agency, gaining extensive knowledge of child abuse and neglect laws, as well as best practices in child welfare. Her advocacy has positively impacted children and families involved in the child welfare system.
In addition, Attorney Swims served as a Public Policy Fellow at Public Sector Consultants, where she evaluated programs related to children’s mental health, faith-based community initiatives, and an anti-gang project through the United States Attorney’s Office. She developed evaluation plans for over 20 community and faith-based organizations, trained more than 100 leaders on empowerment evaluation principles, and co-authored the evaluation section of a federal grant awarded in the amount of $500,000.
Adept at navigating the intersection of law, public policy, and community dynamics, Attorney Swims is deeply committed to justice and fighting for her clients’ rights. With a compassionate and diplomatic approach, she ensures that all voices are heard—particularly when conflict arises.
Attorney Swims holds a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice and a Master of Public Administration with a focus on Criminal Justice Administration from Grand Valley State University, as well as a Juris Doctorate from Western Michigan University Cooley Law School.
She is an active member of the Saginaw Bar Association and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and has served on the Foster Care Review Board, the State Court Administrative Office’s Child and Family Services Review Committee, and the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children.
